Flounder fishing can be incredibly rewarding, and with a little know-how, you can enhance your chances of reeling in those prized flatfish. So, without further ado, here are five tips to help you catch more flounder this summer: - [Keeping speckled trout alive](https://uglyfishing.com/keeping-speckled-trout-alive/): Why do I need to keep my speckled trout alive? In my area (Mobile Bay in Southwest Alabama) we have several fishing tournaments that are focused on speckled trout or have speckled trout categories. Many of those tournaments do not require nor reward for bringing in live speckled trout but a few do provide rewards. Another reason to keep your fish alive for tournament purposes is to reduce potential weight loss by dead fish. A really good reason to keep your speckled trout alive is for the purpose of culling smaller fish. The last good reason I can think of why someone would want to keep his or her catch alive for tournament purpose is so they can release the fish after weighing in. That is if they do not plan to eat the fish. Therefore, I will break down the how to's of fish care and live well set up to maximize keeping your catch alive. - [How to catch Sheepshead](https://uglyfishing.com/how-to-catch-sheepshead/): Sheepshead, also known as convict fish, are a popular saltwater fish species found along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States. These fish are known for their hard fighting ability and their love of bait, which makes them a great catch for anglers. However, they can be a bit tricky to catch, as they are notorious for stealing bait from hooks. So, if you're looking to catch sheepshead, here's what you need to know. - [The Winter Classic 2021](https://uglyfishing.com/the-winter-classic-2021/): Wow! Seven successful Winter Classic fishing tournaments are now in the record books. The Winter Classic 2021 dates were January 23rd and 24th. Which, included the three time and defending champions Captain Bobby Abruscato and Captain Richard Rutland AKA The Wrecking Crew. Now, anglers can begin planning his or her red snapper fishing trips. 2020 Alabama red snapper season is set based on the harvest data from previous years. Regardless of where you are when spring rolls around most fish get more active and more willing to bite when spring arrives. Spring, Summer, fall and winter fishing Gulf Shores is no different. Many local and out of town guests are eager to locate the right Gulf Shores inshore fishing charter to target some of Mobile Bay's best inshore and nearshore species. Typical years we are targeting sheepshead, redfish, speckled trout and black drum during the spring months. There are several Gulf Shores inshore fishing charters available but only a few will take care of the customer. CCA Alabama has compiled a list of true stewards CLICK HERE for those guides. - [Winter Classic 2020](https://uglyfishing.com/winter-classic-2020/): The Winter Classic 2020 edition is in the books! Like always we had our share of ugly weather, lock jaw Mobile bay speckled trout, but most importantly eager anglers who all enter with the intent of holding a big check and plaque at the end of the weekend. How is this the best speckled trout fishing tournament? The weigh in process, the rules, and the live fish bonus! Conservation is the focus in this tournament. This year we are supporting the Mobile Bay speckled trout restocking program. Protecting and promoting the fish we enjoy to target and catch is a great way to spend a weekend. - [Current Alabama State Record Sheepshead](https://uglyfishing.com/alabama-state-record-sheepshead/): On March 29, 2019 I landed a fish that put me in the Alabama record books. I can actually say that "I Captain Patric Garmeson hold the current Alabama state record sheepshead." While this accomplishment seems like it could happen to anyone with a hook in the water I feel as if I prepared for this fish nearly my whole life. Sure there are more prestigious records and some states host an even larger state record but this was a really special catch. Below I quoted my article that was published in Great Days Outdoors Magazine. This article captures a bit of my childhood journey developing as a sheepshead anger right on through to the day of the record breaking catch. I hope you enjoy the story and thanks for checking it out. :-) - [Alabama’s 2019 red snapper season dates](https://uglyfishing.com/2019-alabama-red-snapper-season/): 2019 alabama red snapper season - [Fairhope Alabama Fishing](https://uglyfishing.com/fairhope-alabama-fishing/): Fairhope Alabama fishing opportunities can be as simple as, take your rod and reel down to the pier or as convenient as booking a Fairhope Fishing Charter. When you chose to book a fishing charter you take all the guessing of whats biting, where and how. You simply compare fishing guides like myself to other full time fishing guides in our area. You will see through online reviews, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube and Podcasts that there are only a few from which to choose. I know when I visit a new area I find my fishing guide through research and referrals. - [2019 Winter Classic](https://uglyfishing.com/2019-winter-classic-results/): The 2019 Winter Classic speckled trout tournament has come and gone and all anglers managed to survive again this year. This was by far the most challenging of all five years of the tournaments existence. Almost perfectly scripted to make it as difficult as possible. I for one love a challenge but this particular winter classic fishing tournament took first place. - [Mobile Alabama Fishing Charters](https://uglyfishing.com/mobile-alabama-fishing-charters/): Mobile Alabama. is located in Southwest Alabama and offers some of the very best inshore, nearshore and offshore fishing along the gulf coast. This Mobile county community is home to several Mobile Alabama fishing charters. The fishing charters located in Mobile, Al. can provide fishing experiences for all levels of skill anglers. Anglers could expect to catch a variety of fish species on any giving outing. - [Dauphin Island Fishing Charters](https://uglyfishing.com/dauphin-island-fishing-charters/): Dauphin Island Al. is located in Southwest Alabama and offers some of the very best inshore, nearshore and offshore fishing along the gulf coast. This south Mobile county community is home to many Dauphin island fishing charters. The fishing charters located on Dauphin island can provide fishing experiences for all levels of skill anglers. Anglers could expect to catch a variety of fish species on any giving outing. - [Springtime Speckled Trout Fishing](https://uglyfishing.com/springtime-speckled-trout-fishing/): Spring brings new life and with it often brings great fishing. Most of the speckled trout are leaving the rivers and creeks where they have spent the last several months and they are hungry! Most of the baitfish and shrimp are in very low supplies right now so speckled trout are not very picky. Speckled trout are doing three things right now; looking for food, headed towards higher salinity water and avoid being eaten. - [Sheepshead Fishing](https://uglyfishing.com/sheepshead-fishing/): It happens every year. Winter turns to spring, spring to summer, summer to fall and fall to winter. Regardless if you want it to happen the seasons change and so do the fish that we target. Springtime sheepshead fishing is a great way to enjoy a day on the water with friends and or family. Once the springtime sheepshead bite begins in March or April it will generally last 4 to 8 weeks. Why is the Springtime so important or why is it so good? - [Bull Redfish](https://uglyfishing.com/bull-redfish/): You may or may not know this but I am on the water all 12 months per year. During those 12 months I am taking clients out into the Gulf of Mexico, Mississippi Sound, Mobile Bay, Weeks Bay and all the rivers that feed Mobile Bay. I have had to adapt to all the seasons, weather and water temperature changes which all dictate how our fish behave. Throughout the 12 months I can target different species nearly 365 days. The first and a local favorite is speckled trout. The second is redfish. Redfish are becoming very popular with my clients and I break the redfish species into two groups. First, the keeper size, which is made up of both undersized (less than 16") and slot size (16"-26"). Then, we have the bull redfish which is any redfish over 26". - [Pompano restocking](https://uglyfishing.com/pompano-restocking/): The Florida pompano (Trachinotus carolinus) is a species of marine fish in the Trachinotus (pompano) genus of the family Carangidae. It has a compressed body and short snout; coloration varies from blue-greenish silver on the dorsal areas and silver to yellow on the body and fins. It can be found along the western coast of the Atlantic Ocean, depending on the season, and is popular for both sport and commercial fishing. Most Florida pompano caught weigh less than 3 lb (1.4 kg) and are less than 17 in (43 cm) long, though the largest individuals weigh 8–9 lb (3.6–4.1 kg) and reach lengths up to 26 in (66 cm). *credit Wikipedia - [Captain Patric’s Salsa](https://uglyfishing.com/captain-patrics-salsa/): 2011 my wife, Autumn and I honeymooned in Belize on San Pedro Island. It was on this vacation that I had a rediscovery of fish tacos. Found an appreciation for great salsa and a new love for ceviche. Autumn and I found the hole in the wall restaurants and a charter boat that provided camp cooking on the beach. Both the local restaurants and the captain of the charter boat inspired me to work on my own salsa recipe. After many tries I feel good about calling my salsa the best salsa. Everyone that has tried it agrees. - [Rising Rivers](https://uglyfishing.com/rising-rivers/): The Mobile Bay Watershed encompasses 65% of the land area for the state of Alabama. Also, includes portions of Mississippi, Georgia and Tennessee. Mobile Bay is the end-point for the Mobile, Tombigbee, Black Warrior, Alabama, Coosa and Tallapoossa Rivers. The watershed is a vast network of over 250 separate waterways, including rivers, bays, creeks, bayous, lakes, cutoffs, branches, and sloughs. *credit Mobilebaykeeper.com* - [Battle Of the Grubs](https://uglyfishing.com/battle-of-the-grubs/): Bruce and Angie Howell stepped up to help with the production of the South Alabama Invitational Speckled Trout Tournament a few years after it began and decided to change the name to Battle Of the Grubs. The name suggested that the anglers would be using only soft plastic grubs to trick his or her speckled trout into the boat. However, all artificial lures would be and still are allowed in the Battle Of the Grubs. - [2018 The Winter Classic](https://uglyfishing.com/2018-winter-classic/): The Winter Classic. The best speckled trout tournament in the entire Mobile Bay area. This is a two day event where you can only use artificial lures and you get bonus points for bringing in live speckled trout. Our 2018 edition of The Winter Classic was the best event thus far. We added 2 additional teams to the fleet from 2017 and added 4 new sponsors. The payouts were the highest ever and the stakes are always high. - [Mobile Bay fishing report](https://uglyfishing.com/mobile-bay-fishing-report/): Huge blast of cold air has invaded the whole country including the Alabama Gulf coast. This Mobile Bay fishing report is a projection of what to expect behind the rainmaker. Monday 12/4 our weather was stable and water temps as warm as 73 degrees. Today I am not fishing because I am watching it rain and the air temperatures are 38 and dropping. Current water temperature is 56 according to mymobilebay.com. Most of the country is under a blanket of snow and some of which may fall near Mobile Bay. - [The Winter Classic 2017](https://uglyfishing.com/the-winter-classic-2017/): The winter classic was born 3 years ago with the intention to bring together some of the best Speckled Trout fisherman the Mobile Bay area has to offer. The focus was on three parts: First and foremost, the tournament would be artificial bait only. Second, it would be a two-day tournament. Third, this would be the first and only Speckled Trout tournament that would promote and even award bonus weight toward weighing live fish that could be released following the weigh-in process. The anglers had to fish in some intense weather changes and patterns. On Saturday the wind was blowing from the south at 15-20mph with severe weather rapidly approaching. At approximately 8am the tornado sirens started sounding all over the Mobile County coastline. It’s to my understanding that all anglers sought cover at that time. About an hour after the first tornado siren sounded, the rain had mostly dissipated and all anglers resumed fishing. The rest of the day was near slick calm conditions. Day one weigh-in had Patric and Trevor in first with a total weight, including bonus, of 20.74#. Wayne Ladnier and Jason Cornelius were in second with a total weight of 17.92# and Jeb Mann and Michael Nicholas were in 3rd with a total weight of 15.88#. On day two the forecast looked grim with winds forecast to blow in the gale force range all day long. Well, the morning began with absolutely slick calm beautiful conditions. These slick calm conditions lasted well into the morning for most anglers (depending on where they were located). Then mid morning all anglers were hit with a wall of wind that was powerful enough to turn a slick calm dog river into a 2' white capping sloppy mess within seconds. The rest of the day, anglers had to figure out how to present a lure and catch a trout at the same time. The weigh-in began at 3pm. Doug Phillips and Luke Ojeda brought in the heaviest sack on Sunday with a total weight of 17.28#, Steve Lindsey and Brandon McCart were close behind with a total Sunday weight of 16.58# and Richard Rutland and Bobby Abruscato had a Sunday total weight of 16.38#. The total weights were tallied and the final results were: Richard and Bobby in 3rd with a total weight of 31.92#; Jeb Mann and Michael Nicholas with a total weight of 31.96# in 2nd place; and Patric Garmeson and Trevor Wood in 1st with a total two day weight of 35.03#. The tournament anglers brought in a total of 130 speckled trout and 98 fish were released alive. ## Pages - [Mobile Bay Fishing Charters](https://uglyfishing.com/mobile-bay-fishing-charters/): Mobile Bay offers year-round inshore fishing opportunities with a diverse mix of Gulf Coast species.
